Coastal Navigation Courses

The Coastal Navigation course is designed as a correspondence course to be taken with your first program or prior to the Coastal / advance courses. Upon completion of the correspondence theory, there is a practical assessment done on the water during your cruise n' learn. Coastal Navigation topics include course plotting, bearings and fixes, variation and deviation, set and drift, tides and currents, collision regulations and the use of government publications.

Coastal Navigation

Coastal Navigation Standard (ASA 105) - Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this Sailing Knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106) - Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing, Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Coastal Navigation Certification. Able to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in coastal and inland water, in any weather.

Celestial Navigation (ASA 107) - Able to demonstrate the Celestial Navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailboat on an offshore passage. The practical application is conducted in the Offshore Passage making Standard

Coastal Navigation Standard - To be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. The concepts are introduced in the Intermediate Cruising and Power Standards. The Coastal Navigation Standard is applied practically and tested in the Advanced Cruising Standard.

Advanced Navigation Standard - To be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel on a multi-day voyage in tidal waters, in all conditions of visibility and weather, in accordance with a prepared passage plan, and applying the principles and techniques of safe navigation aided by conventional and electronic instruments and radar.  (This standard comprises 4 modules and it is anticipated that they will be taught and examined independently. To be awarded the standard the student must complete all the modules. There is no time limit for this completion nor is there a required sequence.)

Celestial Navigation Standard - To be able to demonstrate the celestial navigation theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage.  The Standard is applied practically in the Offshore Cruising Standard.
