Day Skipper Course

Choose from ASA or Sail Canada

Based in the scenic cruising grounds of the Gulf Islands, this 5 day, comprehensive course covers boat handling and safe seamanship practices as well as introducing the basics of coastal navigation. After departing our base, you'll spend five days on board a 34 - 40 ft sailboat, cruising and learning through some of the most spectacular waters in the world. You'll spend each night either at anchor under the stars or secured at a cozy marina.

Prices include:

  • 5 nights live aboard accommodation (linens) 
  • 4PM on Sunday, Instructor carries out Orientation, you visit town, have dinner and sleep aboard
  • Instruction & course materials for the certification of your choice, recommend ASA
  • breakfast, lunch and supper and snacks etc
  • You learn the art of sailing
  • cooking aboard, navigator, skipper and keeping the yacht tidy.
  • a few nights at anchor and in docks of the teams choice.
  • Return to dock on Friday around 2PM, clean up, complete exams and all documentation.
  • Off you go with some real good sailing skills and ready for your next level of training.
  • Ask about IPC logbook for international recognition.

Additional Costs:​

  • ASA Certification Fee:      $75 per person (Includes certificate & 1 year membership )
  • IPC Fee :    $140  - International Proficiency Certificate
  • ASA Exams:      $35 per exam    (ASA-105 $65)

As a sailing school, we provide the highest level of instruction, from beginner to offshore, by using the most comprehensive and modern methods of instruction, the most personable and knowledgeable instructors and the finest yachts. To ensure optimum personal attention, there is a limit to the number of students per course.  ​

We have chosen certification for international recognition, unsurpassed beginner to offshore modular workbook system, and the quality of instructors developed by the clinics. Our certification also qualifies the holder for significant insurance discounts on privately owned vessels and meets the requirements for the Canadian Coast Guard Operator Licensing Standard.

ASA Program
Basic Keelboat & Basic Coastal Cruising

Basic Keelboat - Demonstrated ability to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 27 feet in length by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Knowledge of basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards. Auxiliary power operation is not required.

Basic Coastal Cruising - Demonstrated ability to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered (outboard or inboard engine) keelboat of approximately 25 to 35 feet length by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather forecast interpretation, safety and seamanship.

Catamaran

ASA114 Cruising Catamaran
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat (101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (103). The Bareboat Charter Standard (104) is also a prerequisite and can be attained either by itself prior to BBC Multihull (114) or in conjunction with BBC Multihull (114). In either case, all material in both standards (104 & 114) must be taught and tested before 114 can be awarded.

Sail Canada Program
Basic Crew & Basic Cruising

Basic Crew- To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as competent crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 meters with an outboard or inboard motor in moderate wind and sea conditions by day..

Basic Cruising - To be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 meters with an outboard or inboard motor in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Stars Courses usually pre-board at 1600 hr on Sunday and return at 14:00hr on the Friday, March through October.
High season July & August.

Basic cruising - Island winery

Level 1 - Introduction to Sailing
Winery Basics - $1,450 p.p.

For those students looking for a holiday
of a slightly more relaxed nature a Competent Crew standard has been developed to provide a sufficient level of knowledge to
assist in the safe operation of a vessel. This 2 day Competent Crew course combines the Pacific Northwest's superb cruising grounds with its award winning coastal wine industry! Join certified sailing instructors and sommeliers for a course ripe with learning and adventure!

  • Basic Cruising Certified to live aboard a sailing vessel in tidal waters as Competent Crew. In an emergency, be able to substitute as skipper. Competent to sail a vessel under 30 ft, where no navigational hazards exist, within 5 miles of safe harbor, during daylight hours only, in light to moderate wind conditions

This course includes 3 night live aboard accommodation, instruction & course material, linens, towels, sleeping bags, foul weather gear, 3 yummy breakfasts and 2 festive dinners
